Adrien Rabiot has made it clear that France are not preparing any special tactical strategy to stop Spain winger Lamine Yamal in their upcoming World Cup semi-final. The French midfielder also revisited the controversy surrounding his earlier remarks about the Barcelona youngster, which became a major talking point during their Euro 2024 clash.

As France prepare for their crucial semi-final against Spain at the Dallas Stadium, memories of past tension have resurfaced. Ahead of Euro 2024’s semi-final, Rabiot had criticised Yamal, saying the Spanish prodigy “had to do much more” if he wanted to feature in a final. That comment sparked a fiery response from Yamal, who posted a cryptic message on social media — “Move in silence, speak only when it’s time to say checkmate” — before scoring a sensational goal that knocked France out of the tournament.

Speaking at his latest press conference, Rabiot dismissed any notion of a specific plan to contain Yamal, insisting that France’s approach will focus on Spain as a whole rather than singling out one player. The midfielder, who previously played for Juventus, emphasised the need to stay alert against La Roja’s attacking threats, especially their ability to create chances in tight spaces around the penalty area.

“There is no anti-Lamine Yamal plan,” Rabiot said. “We’re focusing on Spain’s team as a unit, not just one player. We know they are dangerous all over the pitch — their attackers, their possession game, their ability to find spaces near the box, and their quick combinations. We have to be aware of everything, not just one player.”

Despite the bitter memories from their previous meeting, Rabiot expressed optimism about France’s current form. He said the squad are in excellent physical and mental shape after enduring a challenging path to the semi-finals. The midfielder called for calm confidence, urging his team to rely on their collective strength and preparation.

“Nothing guarantees victory. Everything will be decided on the pitch,” Rabiot added. “We are focused and will prepare very well for this match. We believe in our journey so far, but we must keep the humility that has guided us through this tournament. Our aim is to reach the final, and we’ll do everything to make that happen.”

When asked again about his past comments regarding Yamal, Rabiot appeared unfazed, saying, “I don’t exactly remember those remarks. But if I said them, it was simply what I thought at that moment.”

France now face a massive test as they aim for an eighth straight win across all competitions. Their opponents, Spain, come into the contest riding a remarkable 16-match unbeaten run, making the Texas showdown one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament. The match will serve as a major challenge for the French defence as they look to contain a Spanish midfield driven by Fabian Ruiz and Rodri.
