Manchester United have reinforced their midfield with two new additions within a matter of days, addressing what many saw as the team’s most pressing issue ahead of the upcoming season.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, both recognised for their ability to deliver incisive, line-breaking passes, are expected to enhance United’s attacking build-up play significantly.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils are equally focused on shoring up their defensive line, and one of their long-standing transfer targets appears to be on the verge of a major move.
Before the World Cup, reports from respected Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, shared by The Peoples Person, indicated that Manchester United were keen on securing the services of Cristian Romero and were prepared to table an offer for the Tottenham Hotspur captain.
Now, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has disclosed that Romero is set to leave Tottenham this summer.
Romano further explained that Inter Milan have been in discussions with the North London club in recent days regarding a possible transfer.
The Serie A giants are reportedly very interested in the Argentine defender, though the deal’s financial demands are described as “very high.”
While Romano did not specifically mention Manchester United among the current suitors, previous reports from Argentina suggest this latest development could reignite United’s interest.
Romero, who lifted the World Cup trophy in 2022, continues to deliver impressive performances for Argentina on the international stage.
He currently partners Manchester United favourite Lisandro Martinez at the centre of Argentina’s defence, forming a formidable pairing admired by fans.
At 28 years old, Romero is known for his aggressive defensive approach and his confidence in handling large defensive spaces. On the ball, he exhibits notable composure and precision in distribution.
However, questions have been raised about his dedication, which might explain Tottenham’s willingness to sanction his departure despite his evident talent. During the club’s relegation scare last season, Romero was criticised for appearing to lose motivation.
Tottenham’s decision to part ways with one of their most gifted defenders could open the door for Manchester United to pursue him once again as part of their continuing defensive rebuild.
