France’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end in the semi-finals after a 2-0 defeat to Spain, with Didier Deschamps’ side unable to match the level of their opponents in Dallas.

Spain controlled large portions of the contest and secured their place in the final through goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. The result ended France’s hopes of reaching another World Cup final and highlighted Spain’s dominance in midfield and possession.

Following the match, France coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged his team’s shortcomings.

“The players are devastated, but we have to be clear-headed: technically, we were second best. That is on us,” Deschamps said.

Spain entered the match with confidence and successfully imposed their style of play. Lamine Yamal played an important role in the team’s attacking approach, while Rodri dictated the tempo from midfield and helped Spain maintain control throughout the game.

France struggled to create consistent attacking opportunities. Michael Olise found it difficult to influence proceedings, while Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and substitute Desire Doué were unable to make a decisive impact in the final third. Kylian Mbappé also failed to find the breakthrough that France had hoped for in such a crucial encounter.

Rayan Cherki admitted Spain’s game management proved challenging for France.

“We knew their main strength was their ability to play at a false tempo. At times, we should have done the same. It was more difficult than we expected,” Cherki said.

France also faced difficulties in midfield. Adrien Rabiot received an early yellow card, while Aurélien Tchouaméni, returning after missing the previous two matches with a hamstring injury, was unable to influence the contest fully.

Spain took the lead in the 22nd minute when Oyarzabal converted a penalty, and Porro added a second goal shortly before the hour mark to put the result beyond doubt.

At full-time, disappointment was evident among the French players as their World Cup journey came to an end. Despite arriving at the tournament with high expectations, France were unable to overcome Spain, who advanced to the final with a disciplined and authoritative performance.
