After the long and scorching summer season, the monsoon rains may give us relief from the scorching sun, but it brings with it a new problem – humidity and sweltering stickiness. During monsoon days, it is often seen that the temperature outside is not very high, yet inside the house there is a strange feeling of suffocation, sweat and a damp smell starts coming from the walls and clothes. In such a situation, air conditioner (AC) can prove to be your biggest help.

AC not only cools the room but also absorbs the extra moisture present in the air. But do you know that the way AC is used during monsoon is completely different from normal summer? If you use the right mode and settings, your AC will absorb the humidity in a jiffy while saving electricity. Let us know some very useful ways to run AC in monsoon:

1. The biggest weapon of monsoon – use ‘Dry Mode’

Nowadays, almost all modern split and window ACs have the option of ‘Dry Mode’ (its symbol on the remote often resembles a water drop or ‘Drop’).

  • How does this work? This mode is specifically designed to absorb excess moisture from the air. When you turn on dry mode, the AC’s compressor and fan speed run in a specific coordination. It completely absorbs the stickiness present in the air without making the room ice cold, making the atmosphere of the room very comfortable and pleasant.

2. Keep the temperature between 24°C to 26°C

Troubled by the humidity, many people set the AC directly to 16-degree or 18-degree Celsius, which is the biggest mistake.

  • Right way: Always keep the temperature between 24°C to 26°C during monsoon. At this temperature the cooling cycle of the AC runs long and stable. Due to the long cycle time, the AC coils get enough time to remove moisture from the air. Also, this temperature is considered best for both your health and electricity bills.

3. Regular cleaning of AC filters is very important

During the rainy season, there is a lot of moisture in the air, due to which dust and dirt stick to the air filters of the AC very quickly.

  • Disadvantage: Dirty and choked filters stop the airflow of the AC. When the air circulation is not proper, the moisture absorbing capacity of the AC will be reduced to half. Apart from this, due to the moisture accumulated on the filters, bacteria grow, due to which a strange smell of rot or dampness starts coming in the room as soon as you turn on the AC.

  • Solution: During monsoon, every 10 to 15 days, open the front panel of the AC, remove its filters and put them back only after washing them with clean water and drying them.
