Polestar is in the final phase of preparing the upcoming, more upright version of its Polestar 4 crossover, which is set to be unveiled on 2 September.
This new version, positioned to compete directly with the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric, has been spotted undergoing high-speed testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The prototype featured production-ready bodywork, clearly showing the transformation from a sleek, coupé-like design into a more traditional SUV form.
According to Polestar, the new Polestar 4 SUV will place a stronger focus on "flexibility and practicality," offering "versatile storage capabilities for every journey."
Back in February, Autocar first reported on Polestar’s intention to introduce this variant, when company CEO Michael Lohscheller described it as “combining the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV.” At that time, the model’s name had not been finalised, and the choice to brand it definitively as an SUV underscores Polestar’s recognition of the growing global demand for such vehicles.
Polestar has now shared the first technical details of this new model, confirming that it will be available with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The top-spec variant will deliver up to 536bhp, matching the performance of the current Polestar 4.
In terms of range, the Polestar 4 SUV will achieve a claimed maximum of 391 miles on a single charge in its most efficient setup, nearly identical to the existing model. It will use the same 400V electrical system that supports rapid charging up to 200kW.
Production of the SUV will take place in Busan, South Korea, alongside its coupé-roofed sibling. The official reveal is expected in the coming weeks, with customer orders opening in September.
Autocar previously reported that this new SUV iteration will reintroduce a traditional, upright rear window, replacing the camera-based rear-view system seen on the current coupé-styled Polestar 4. This design decision contributes to a more conventional SUV aesthetic while maintaining Polestar’s distinctive Scandinavian design cues.
The overall styling of the Polestar 4 SUV will be more traditional compared to the existing 4, which blends elements of a coupé, crossover, and saloon and is seen as a direct rival to the Porsche Macan Electric.
At around 4850mm in length, the new Polestar 4 SUV will be slightly shorter than the US-built Polestar 3, which is positioned as a more premium and performance-oriented offering.
Once launched, the Polestar 4 SUV will compete in a much more crowded segment than the coupé-style 4, taking on rivals such as the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric, Audi Q6 E-tron, Lexus RZ, and the popular Tesla Model Y.
The model is part of Polestar’s broader strategy to introduce four new vehicles by the end of 2028. This initiative aims to help the brand recover from significant financial losses and achieve sustainable profitability.
Polestar sold approximately 60,000 vehicles last year and has set an ambitious goal to boost annual production to 100,000 units. The company expects these new models to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market from 25% to between 55% and 65% of the available segments.
The Polestar 4 SUV follows the recently revealed Polestar 5 GT and will be accompanied next year by the next-generation Polestar 2, with a smaller Polestar 7 crossover slated for release in 2028.
