Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress has suffered a major setback in West Bengal. MLA and party’s Chief Whip Madan Mitra has resigned from the party and joined the rebel group led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Madan Mitra was considered a trusted ally of Mamata Banerjee. Even during the formation of Trinamool Congress, Madan Mitra supported Mamata Banerjee and was a trusted soldier of the party for decades.

A day earlier, the Enforcement Directorate summoned Madan Mitra’s wife and two sons in a money laundering case to the municipal recruitment scam. The next day i.e. on Wednesday, Madan Mitra distanced himself from Mamata Banerjee and joined the rebel group.

Madan Mitra said, ‘I had suggested to Abhishek Banerjee that he step away for six months or a year. I told him let’s strengthen the party and then you can come back and take your place, but he refused. He (Abhishek) said that I will not leave the party.

‘It is necessary to save Abhishek’

Madan Mitra further said, ‘The party is sinking, the boat has sunk. People are dying. Yet the party decided…or rather they were forced to accept that it was okay if everyone else died, but it was necessary to save Abhishek. this is very sad.’

Party limited to Abhishek Seva only: Madan Mitra

He further said, ‘The party is for everyone yet it seems that it is limited to serving Abhishek only. I request Mamata ji to treat this like a marathon. We will definitely come across each other on the way. Let’s see which horse comes out ahead. I have resigned from all posts. Although I am still an MLA. I have left everything to Trinamool. This means that in terms of work, I am no longer a Trinamool MLA.

How big is the rebellion in TMC?

  • 59 MLAs rebelled against Madan Mitra.
  • 20 MPs also left TMC.
  • 3 Rajya Sabha MPs also join BJP after resignation.

TMC’s political mathematics

  • Lok Sabha MPs 28, now only 8 with the party.
  • 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, seven with the same party.
