Sour smell coming from the kitchen drain? Test the paper and glass before calling the mechanic

If you are not at home for a few days, there are thousands of problems! Upon entering the kitchen after returning home, the smell of Vapsa is the life of the householder! While searching, it can be seen that this smell is coming from the kitchen sink drain (Kitchen sink drain odor). Why? Because from the dishes that were washed in the sink, food pieces, fish and meat particles were carried by the water and went into the drain. But then since the sink was not used for a few days, it could not go out completely. Rather, a part of the drain has become frozen. It decomposed and produced foul-smelling gas, which came out of the drain, filling the kitchen.

Pipe ‘P-Trap’

There is usually an English U-shaped pipe under the sink, known as a ‘P-trap’. Some water always accumulates in this part. As a result, a natural seal is created on its own and foul-smelling sewer gas cannot back up. But if the sink is not used for a few days, especially in summer, this water slowly evaporates. This possibility is more in Bengali kitchens because of the ingredients used in cooking. Ghee, oil spices do not wash away easily in water. Accumulation increases the number of bacteria.

A simple test of a glass of water and paper can be done at home to understand what is really wrong with the sink. How to do?

  • Fill a glass with water, hold a square piece of paper in its mouth.
  • Then the paper should be quickly turned upside down in the mouth of the sink drain. It should be seen that the circumference of the glass sits properly on the circumference of the drain. If brought to ‘airtight’ condition, water will not fall at all. Rather, it will stick tightly.
  • Leave it like this for at least 20 minutes.
The test can be done with paper and glass.

Generally, this test requires time for the reverse side of the paper to become wet. But if the hard gas comes up from inside the drain, the paper starts getting wet from below. If it stays that way for a long time, the paper can get wet and tear on both sides. That is, by looking at the results of the test, it can be confirmed whether there is garbage inside the drain or not.

In such a situation, the water can be slowly poured into the drain. If it reduces the stench, then it must be understood that no damage has been done. But if this does not reduce, then definitely take the help of an expert plumber.
