A high-profile international syndicate worth crores of rupees, running in the name of illegally sending Nepali citizens to America, has been busted. In this big scam, Kathmandu District Court, while giving a historic verdict, has sentenced Nepal’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court made it clear that this organized fraud has deeply hurt Nepal’s sovereignty and international image. Nepali citizens were hatching a conspiracy by making Bhutanese citizens fake refugees. The truth that has come out in the investigation of this entire matter has shocked everyone. Actually, this whole racket used to collect huge amount of money from Nepali citizens and promise to send them to America. For this, the accused prepared fake documents with the connivance of the government. Through these fake documents, original Nepali citizens were declared as ‘Bhutanese Refugees’ on paper, so that they could easily reach Washington by taking advantage of the third country resettlement program run by America. More than 15 influential people, including the former Home Minister, were convicted. The single bench of Kathmandu District Court Judge Tej Bahadur Khadka took a very strict stance in this case. Apart from former Deputy PM Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, the country’s former Home Minister and senior Nepali Congress leader Bal Krishna Khand has also been found guilty of helping in this conspiracy and has been sentenced to 2 years in jail. The court has sent more than 15 accused involved in this entire network, including former Home Secretary Tech Narayan Pandey and the Security Advisor to the Home Minister, behind bars after finding them guilty under various sections of fraud, crimes against the state and organized crime. This mega scam started in the year 2023, when hundreds of victims lodged a complaint with the police that lakhs of rupees were extorted from them in the name of sending them to America but they were not sent abroad. As the police investigation progressed, the names of big politicians and bureaucrats in the government machinery started coming to light, after which former Deputy PM Rayamajhi remained absconding for several days. Defense and law experts believe that in the politics of South Asia, the jailing of a former Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister level leader in serious cases like human trafficking and fraud will set an example and this will further strengthen the ongoing campaign against corruption in Nepal.
