The last new Volvo station wagon available in the U.S., the V60 Cross Country, is being discontinued this year. This change will leave Volvo without any sedan or wagon offerings in the American market, effectively making the brand’s lineup entirely crossover-based for the time being. However, a recent report indicates that this situation might not last long.
According to a source “briefed on the discussions,” as reported by Automotive News, Volvo is considering introducing a new fully electric mid-sized sedan and station wagon to the U.S. market by 2028. Both models are currently under development for European customers, where they are expected to carry Volvo’s familiar -60 or -70 naming convention that has been used for decades in this segment. The report also mentions that a Cross Country variant could be in the works, which might appeal to American buyers who prefer a higher-riding, crossover-like wagon, similar to the lifted estate models offered by Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Polestar, another brand under Geely’s ownership that originated from Volvo’s performance division, is set to exit the U.S. market after the 2027 model year. Volvo’s plan to launch its new sedan and wagon in 2028 could therefore fill the gap left by Polestar, occupying the market space initially targeted by the Polestar 2 and the Polestar 4 SUV unveiled in February.
Since these upcoming Volvo models are reportedly already being developed for Europe, it appears that their creation goes beyond merely reintroducing Polestar’s presence in the U.S. Automotive News notes that both vehicles will likely be built using Volvo’s third-generation Scalable Product Architecture platform, the same underpinnings used for the Volvo EX60 and the forthcoming Polestar 7.
With a prospective launch as early as 2028—just about 18 months away—Volvo is expected to finalize its decision regarding the American launch of these vehicles soon. Should the plan move forward, production numbers are expected to remain modest, with projections indicating around 10,000 combined annual sales in the U.S. for the two mid-sized models.
