When it comes to momo, the enjoyment of this steamed delight is incomplete without the spicy red chutney. For the uninitiated, it is a flavorful dipping sauce traditionally served with momos, usually made with dried red chilies, fresh tomatoes, garlic, ginger, vinegar or lemon juice, salt, and sometimes soy sauce or spices. During a recent inspection in Kanpur, the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department (FDA) destroyed around 115 kg of red chutney in the municipal corporation's waste disposal yard.
According to a report by Jagran, officials launched a special campaign in the Rawatpur, Saket Nagar and Maswanpur areas and shut down three momo units operating amidst filth. During the inspection, the chutney served with momos was found to be unhygienic and stored in suspicious conditions. On the District Magistrate's instruction, officials inspected three units and found a serious lack of cleanliness. The shops inspected included Akash Momos in Keshav Nagar, Shri Balaji Momos in Rawatpur and a unit in Saket Nagar. Officials found that Shri Balaji Momos manufacturing unit lacked the required food registration for the food business.
According to Jagran report, the department took samples of coloured chutney and momos for testing and destroyed about 45 kg of chutney. Instructions were given to close the establishment until food registration is obtained and all deficiencies are rectified. It was also reported that during the campaign, colored finger chips and chutneys sold on momo carts in Maswanpur were found to be non-compliant with hygiene standards and were destroyed on the spot. According to officials, if any irregularities are found in the report, legal action will be taken against the concerned businesses under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
