Raipur, 16 July. The country’s first important decision has come out in the matter of vehicle malfunction due to E20 petrol. Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, while giving its verdict in favor of the car owner, has directed the vehicle manufacturer and the concerned parties to provide a new car within 45 days or pay about Rs 20.50 lakh. According to the case, Raipur resident Premraj Devta had filed an online complaint on March 12, 2025, which was registered on April 16, 2025. The commission announced its decision on 14 July.

Problems started arising after using E20 petrol

The complainant said that after starting the use of E20 petrol in his Maruti Grand Vitara, many engine problems started appearing. Complaints like misfiring, decline in performance and low mileage of the vehicle remained constant. Despite checking and repairing at the service center several times, the problem was not resolved.

The Commission accepted that the consumer had no choice

Hearing the case under Section 35 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the Commission partially accepted the complaint. The Commission acknowledged that since only E20 petrol was available at most of the petrol pumps, the consumer had practically no option of any other fuel.

Order to give new car or Rs 20.50 lakh in 45 days

The Commission ordered that the concerned parties should take back the old car of the complainant and provide a new car of the same model, compatible with E20 fuel, within 45 days. If this is not done, Rs 20,50,494 will have to be paid including the price of the vehicle and other expenses.

Compensation will also be given for mental damage

The Commission has also directed to give Rs 1 lakh to the complainant for the mental pain he suffered and Rs 10,000 for the litigation expenses. According to the order, if payment is not made within 45 days, 7 percent annual interest will also have to be paid on the entire amount till the date of payment.
