Earthquake Tremors Felt In Gujarat: Two consecutive earthquake tremors in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Thursday afternoon left people in panic for some time. The special thing was that there was a difference of only three minutes between the two earthquakes. However, it is a matter of relief that according to initial reports, no loss of life or property has been reported. Nevertheless, this incident has once again reminded of the seismic sensitivity of Kutch.
The first shock came at 2:20 pm
The first earthquake was recorded at 2:20 pm. Its intensity was measured at 3.6 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 32 kilometers north-east of Khavra. The tremors were mild, but people felt the vibration in many areas. Some people came out of their homes and offices as a precaution.
After three minutes the ground shook again
Just three minutes after the first shock, a second earthquake occurred at 2:23 p.m. Its intensity was recorded at 3.2. This time the epicenter of the earthquake was about 32 kilometers west-north from Dholavira. Concern among the local people increased due to two consecutive aftershocks, but according to the administration the situation remains completely normal.
No damage reported
The administration and concerned agencies said that there has been no report of any building being damaged or any person being injured after both the earthquakes. Relief and rescue teams have been kept alert and the affected areas are being monitored.
Experts say that earthquakes of light intensity generally do not cause major damage, but it is always important to maintain vigilance in such areas.
Why is Kutch area sensitive?
Kutch is counted among the most earthquake affected areas of India. This area comes under Seismic Zone-5 with high seismic risk. Earthquakes of mild and medium intensity keep occurring here from time to time.
In the year 2001, the devastating earthquake that occurred in Bhuj of Kutch caused huge devastation. Since then, earthquake activities in this area are continuously monitored and the disaster management system has also been strengthened.
Earthquakes felt in many states in recent days
In the last few days, earthquake tremors have been felt in different parts of the country.
- On July 13, an earthquake of 3.6 magnitude was recorded at night in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. Its center was at a depth of about 10 kilometers from the ground.
- On July 9, mild earthquake tremors were also felt in Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani districts of Marathwada region of Maharashtra. However, no major damage was reported there either.
- Earlier on June 27, a powerful earthquake of 6.2 magnitude had occurred in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan. Due to its great depth, its tremors were felt in Pakistan, northern parts of India, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.
Vigilance is the best protection
Experts believe that it is not possible to predict natural disasters like earthquakes. In such a situation, knowledge of safety rules and emergency preparedness is very important for people living in earthquake affected areas. At present the situation in Kutch is normal, but two consecutive aftershocks have definitely indicated that it is always necessary to be cautious in seismically sensitive areas.
