Manchester United have reportedly approached Inter Milan regarding left-back Carlos Augusto and have also evaluated West Ham United’s full-back Oliver Scarles, as per journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Red Devils are keen to strengthen their options on the left side of defence and bring in a reliable backup and competitor for Luke Shaw during the summer transfer window.

West Ham’s emerging talent Oliver Scarles primarily features as a left-back but is equally adept at operating further up as a wing-back or even in midfield roles.

The 20-year-old defender could be open to a move away from the London Stadium following West Ham United’s relegation last season.

However, Manchester United have yet to make any formal approach for Scarles, and their enquiry about Augusto reportedly dates back to April.

“I’ve heard that Manchester United made an enquiry actually in April for Carlos Augusto,” Ben Jacobs revealed during his appearance on The United Stand.

“He’s able to play both as a left midfielder and as a left-back. They have looked at a few young prospects, such as Oliver Scarles from West Ham, as a full-back option who brings some versatility to the role.

“But their main focus remains on finding someone who can start regularly and is a true specialist on that left-hand side.”

Augusto, a Brazilian defender, is known for his versatility, being capable of operating on either flank as well as in central defence.

The 27-year-old has featured in 100 league matches for Inter Milan, contributing to two Serie A title triumphs during his three seasons in Italy.

Manchester United could certainly benefit from his experience and quality, but their current emphasis lies on strengthening the midfield department.

The club has already reinforced its midfield with the arrivals of Brazilian Andrey Santos and Belgian international Youri Tielemans.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils are still targeting an additional midfielder, particularly with Manuel Ugarte expected to be sidelined for a significant part of the upcoming season.

In addition, Manchester United are also exploring options for a left winger and a forward to improve squad depth, which explains their interest in versatile players who can contribute both defensively and in attack.
