Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly declined Nottingham Forest’s initial bid for Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The 20-year-old has become the top target for the Tricky Trees as they look to reinvest the substantial funds gained from Elliot Anderson’s transfer to Manchester City.
Forest’s pursuit of Bergvall hits a roadblock
According to The Athletic, Tottenham have resisted Nottingham Forest’s first attempt to sign Bergvall from north London this summer. Despite the rejection, Forest remain determined and are expected to return with an improved offer for the Swedish youngster, who has emerged as their main focus in this transfer window.
The approach comes as Forest plan to utilise the impressive £116 million received from Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City. Bergvall is viewed as the perfect replacement for the England international, but Tottenham are unwilling to negotiate unless their valuation for the midfielder is met.
A breakout debut season sparks uncertainty
Bergvall joined Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2024 from Djurgarden for £8.5 million and made an instant impact. He concluded a brilliant debut season by winning the club’s Player of the Year award and helping Spurs capture the 2025 Europa League title, ending a 17-year wait for silverware. However, since Roberto De Zerbi took charge as head coach in March, the youngster’s role has diminished, with only one start under the Italian manager.
Although contracted until 2031, Bergvall has reportedly informed the club’s hierarchy of his desire to seek a new challenge. His potential availability has attracted attention from several European sides, yet Nottingham Forest are the first to make a concrete bid to test Tottenham’s stance.
Tottenham’s summer rebuild continues
The north London club have been highly active in the transfer market, which could explain Bergvall’s growing frustration. Spurs have already spent heavily this summer, including an £85 million deal for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and a £100 million transfer for former Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. This influx of talent has intensified competition in De Zerbi’s midfield.
Other major departures may also be on the cards. Brazilian forward Richarlison is reportedly attracting strong interest from Juventus, who are keen to rejuvenate their attack. With numerous clubs eyeing their fringe players, Tottenham look set for a hectic end to the transfer window as they balance incoming signings with potential exits.
Glasner strengthens Forest’s midfield options
Meanwhile, new Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has already made moves to strengthen his squad. The club recently secured Austrian international Xaver Schlager on a free transfer from RB Leipzig, reuniting him with his former Wolfsburg boss. The addition brings valuable experience to the City Ground. Nevertheless, Forest continue to see Bergvall as a long-term investment who could complete Glasner’s midfield rebuild ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
