AI is becoming more and more embedded in our homes as time goes by. Chatbots are becoming ‘friends’ of ‘lonely’ people by giving them a momentary companionship. There is a tendency to discuss many things with him. But what if the subject is suicide? Unbeknownst to the family, if the teenage child of the house proceeds to take extreme measures like ending himself? Their guardians will get that information only if they go to discuss it with the AI. Meta is bringing such a feature.

It is known that the matter is currently at the level of examination. An AI system is being introduced to identify such conversations, which will signal to parents when teenagers discuss topics like suicide on Instagram and other platforms’ Meta AI. However, the company said the AI will not make any final decisions on its own. Before any notification is sent to parents, each conversation identified through AI will first be reviewed by a human. Also caution is preferred if the issue of direct suicide is not raised, i.e. the motive is unclear. Initially launched in certain countries but gradually it will be spread globally.

Beyond parental warnings, Meta is working on another safeguard, which could include emergency service providers. Emergency service providers will also be alerted if users are at immediate risk of suicide. If a conversation with Meta AI indicates that a user (be it a teenager or an adult) is in immediate danger of suicide, emergency services can be notified.
