Atletico Madrid are reportedly showing strong interest in signing Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United this summer.
The Argentine defender has impressed since his move to the Premier League, and according to reports from Spain, the La Liga side are hoping to secure his signature for around €40 million. However, it remains uncertain whether Manchester United will agree to let him go at that price.
The Red Devils have already lined up a potential replacement should Martinez depart. Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven has emerged as a leading target for the Old Trafford club, although Spurs are unlikely to part ways with the Dutchman easily. Van de Ven has been an integral part of the north London side’s defence, and his club are expected to demand a substantial fee to even consider his sale.
Van de Ven is widely regarded as one of the most promising central defenders in English football at the moment. A move to Manchester United might appeal to him, given that the club can offer UEFA Champions League football and the opportunity to compete for major honours — something Tottenham are still striving to achieve.
Meanwhile, Cristian Romero has also been linked with a possible move away from Tottenham, and it is highly improbable that the club would allow both of their top central defenders to leave in the same transfer window.
Furthermore, the reported €40 million valuation for Lisandro Martinez appears rather low considering his quality and consistency for both club and country. Manchester United are expected to push for a significantly higher fee should they decide to sanction his sale.
Whether the Argentine international is tempted by the prospect of joining Atletico Madrid remains to be seen, but his future could become one of the more intriguing stories of the upcoming transfer window.
