New Delhi: An important hearing was held in the Delhi High Court on Thursday regarding the indefinite hunger strike of social activist Sonam Wangchuk. The central government assured the court that Wangchuk’s health is being constantly monitored by government doctors and if any medical intervention is required as per the advice of the doctors, necessary steps will be taken immediately.
This matter came to light during the hearing of a petition in which, in view of the deteriorating health condition of Wangchuk, a demand was made to provide immediate medical care.
High Court gave instructions for regular health checkup
The bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia said that the life of every citizen is extremely valuable. The court directed the Central Government to conduct daily medical examination of Sonam Wangchuk and take necessary treatment or intervention based on the doctors’ report.
Central government gave assurance
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the court that government doctors and experts are constantly monitoring Wangchuk’s health condition. He said that if the medical team advises any treatment or other assistance, the government will immediately take necessary steps. Expressing satisfaction over this stand of the Centre, the High Court disposed of the petition.
What was the demand made in the petition?
This PIL was filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini. In the petition, a demand was made to direct the Central Government and Delhi Government to ensure the safety of Sonam Wangchuk and if necessary, she should be admitted to the hospital and provided proper treatment. Besides, there was also a demand to provide essential nutrients, vitamins and liquid diet to maintain their health.
Hunger strike continues for 19th day
Sonam Wangchuk is sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28. Their main demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. They allege that there should be a fair investigation and responsibility should be fixed for various examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak.

According to Dr. Satish Lamba, a senior doctor who is monitoring Wangchuk’s health, his weight has decreased by about 500 grams in the last 24 hours. Since the hunger strike started, his weight has decreased by more than 9 kilograms. However, at present his blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen level are being kept under medical monitoring.
