Thomas Tuchel is expected to continue as the England manager despite facing significant criticism following the Three Lions’ World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday.
Anthony Gordon gave England the lead early in the second half, putting them on track for their first World Cup final appearance since 1966. However, defensive substitutions and a deep-lying strategy invited pressure, allowing Argentina to dominate the closing stages. Enzo Fernandez levelled the score before Lautaro Martinez headed home from Lionel Messi’s cross in stoppage time to seal England’s exit.
Tuchel has stated that he intends to lead the national team into Euro 2028, where England will serve as one of the host nations. Nevertheless, calls for his dismissal have emerged from certain quarters following the disappointing end to their World Cup campaign.
If the Football Association ultimately decides to part ways with Tuchel, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is currently the bookmakers’ top choice to succeed him. Betting company Betfair has priced Howe at 5/2 to become the next England manager, putting him ahead of Pep Guardiola, who stands at 10/3.
Guardiola, who recently concluded a decade-long, trophy-filled tenure with Manchester City, is currently a free agent. His availability has naturally made him one of the frontrunners for the position should it become vacant.
While Howe and Guardiola lead the odds, several other notable figures are also under consideration. Mauricio Pochettino, who guided the USA to the last 16 before being eliminated by Belgium, is listed at 7/1. Former interim England boss Lee Carsley, who continues to impress with his work with the Under-21 squad, is rated 15/2.
Gareth Southgate, who previously managed the senior team, is 10/1 to return for a second spell. Sweden’s head coach Graham Potter features at 11/1, while Frank Lampard, after a strong stint at Coventry City, is quoted at 12/1.
Kieran McKenna, who recently left Ipswich Town after achieving a second promotion from the Championship in three years, is priced at 16/1. Among the outsiders, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has odds of 20/1, while former Villa manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard follows at 22/1.
For the time being, however, Tuchel is widely expected to remain in charge. The odds of 1/5 suggest that he will lead England into their first UEFA Nations League fixture against Spain in September.
