Robert Lewandowski has spoken publicly for the first time since sealing his headline-making transfer to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, sharing the heartfelt reasons behind his decision to leave European football after departing Barcelona.

Lewandowski’s decision to join MLS

The Polish striker was officially unveiled as Chicago Fire’s marquee signing this week, bringing to a close a glittering spell at the summit of European football. Although several Champions League regulars and major clubs across Europe expressed serious interest, Lewandowski felt his chapter in European club football had reached its natural end following his tenure at Camp Nou.

After joining his new teammates for initial training sessions, the former Bayern Munich marksman revealed that his emotional attachment to Barcelona was key in shaping his decision to move to the United States. According to him, playing for another European club after his time in Spain would have felt like a backward step.

Turning down offers from Italy and Turkey

Prior to finalising his switch to Chicago, speculation was rife about Lewandowski’s next destination. Reports indicated that the striker had received lucrative proposals from teams in Turkey, Portugal, and Italy, with Serie A powerhouse Juventus among the most frequently mentioned suitors.

However, the 37-year-old made it clear that he had no desire to wear the colours of another European club. “My time at Barca was over and I couldn’t imagine myself in another European club,” he told reporters. “My affection for Barca was too big.”

The Berhalter influence

Although his departure from Barcelona was emotionally charged, Lewandowski’s arrival in Chicago has generated huge excitement. Head coach Gregg Berhalter played a pivotal role in securing the signing and believes the veteran striker will have a transformative effect on the club.

Berhalter expressed strong confidence in the Polish forward’s professionalism and influence. “We are convinced that he'll have an immediate impact on the team. First of all, he is a model professional. He has been doing this for a long time and knows how to take care of his body and how to maintain an optimal level. I think he will be a role model,” the former USMNT coach said in remarks quoted by Pilka Nozna.

A new era begins in Chicago

Lewandowski is now gearing up for his competitive debut. Chicago Fire supporters will not have to wait long to witness their new star in action, as the team prepares to face Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday night, local time. The match will also see him reunite with his former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller. Having already taken part in his first training session on Tuesday, the striker is ready to show that age is merely a number. From his early days at Delta Warsaw to his peak years in Munich and Barcelona, Lewandowski’s incredible journey now continues under the bright lights of Chicago’s sporting scene.
