Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United departure faces new hurdles as release clause lapses

The future of Marcus Rashford at Manchester United has become increasingly uncertain after a key release clause in his contract expired, complicating a potential summer transfer.

The 29-year-old forward has not featured for United’s first team since December 2024, having spent loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. However, his situation remains unclear after Barcelona opted not to make his loan permanent.

The Catalan club had an option to sign Rashford for €30 million (£25.4 million), but considered the figure excessive and instead finalised a £69 million move for Anthony Gordon.

Rashford is expected to rejoin the Manchester United squad for pre-season training, although he still appears likely to leave Old Trafford permanently before the new campaign begins.

According to The Athletic, those plans have been disrupted by the expiry of his release clause, which has made any transfer more complicated.

Rashford’s deal previously included a £40 million release clause open to all clubs except Manchester City and Liverpool, United’s fiercest rivals. With that clause now inactive, any move would require direct negotiations between United and the buying club rather than a straightforward buyout.

Reports suggest Rashford has already rejected several offers from interested teams, including some that would have surpassed his current wage package at United.

There remains a possibility that Rashford could be reintegrated into the squad under new manager Michael Carrick. His earlier loan to Aston Villa came after losing favour with then-boss Ruben Amorim, who has since taken charge at AC Milan.

For now, Rashford’s future is expected to stay unresolved as he focuses on completing England’s World Cup campaign. The Three Lions are set to play in the bronze medal match on Saturday. Rashford has made five appearances for England this summer, scoring once, and featured briefly in the semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have already commenced their pre-season preparations and will play their first warm-up match on Saturday against Wrexham in Helsinki.
