New Delhi. There is a substance like cholesterol wax which is similar to fat. Our body needs some amount of cholesterol which is necessary for the production of cell membrane and Vitamin D.
The liver naturally produces the amount of cholesterol the body requires. However, due to many problems occurring in the body, the level of blood cholesterol starts increasing. High cholesterol levels can prove to be very dangerous for our health. Its increase increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
According to CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), high blood cholesterol of 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more is considered dangerous. Whereas, healthy cholesterol level is less than 200 mg/dL.
There can be many reasons for increasing cholesterol level in the body. Let us know the reasons due to which cholesterol starts increasing suddenly.

For what reasons does cholesterol level become high?
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), common causes of cholesterol include unbalanced diet, inadequate physical activity and obesity. All these things cause increase in cholesterol in the long run.
If the level of cholesterol in the body is high, the doctor can tell you some things that can reduce your cholesterol level like change in diet and eating habits, doing physical activity daily, maintaining weight and not smoking.
Many people also have high cholesterol levels due to genetic reasons. This is called familial hypercholesterolemia.
Due to what reasons does cholesterol level increase suddenly?
In some cases, cholesterol levels increase rapidly. Reasons for sudden increase in cholesterol level include:
Excessive consumption of coffee-
The amount of caffeine in coffee is very high due to which blood pressure increases rapidly. Apart from this, blood cholesterol also starts increasing rapidly by consuming coffee. According to a study conducted in the year 2018, consuming 4 espressos daily suddenly increases the level of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) i.e. bad cholesterol in the body.
Psychological stress-
There is a deep connection between stress and cholesterol level. Due to psychological stress, the level of bad cholesterol in the body suddenly starts increasing. This may be due to the cortisol hormone, which increases during stress. According to an article of the year 2020, due to high level of cortisol hormone, the cholesterol level in the body also increases.
smoking-
Cholesterol levels also increase due to smoking. This happens because of the nicotine and tobacco present in cigarettes.
According to an article from the year 2021, when smoking cigarettes, a large amount of nicotine enters the bloodstream through our lungs. Due to which catecholamine is released from the body. Increased catecholamine levels increase lipolysis, or lipid breakdown, which increases the production of LDL cholesterol. An increase in LDL cholesterol reduces the level of HDL cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol.
Medicines-
Due to consumption of some medicines, the level of cholesterol in the body increases significantly. Cholesterol level in the body increases due to these medicines-
Blood pressure lowering medicines, beta blockers, danazol, retinoids, antiviral drugs, anti psychotics etc. In general, these medicines increase blood cholesterol levels by altering lipid metabolism. Some medicines, such as antipsychotics, can cause weight gain as well as increase cholesterol levels.
pregnancy–
During pregnancy, blood cholesterol level increases by 30 to 40 percent. This happens because cholesterol is very important for the growth and development of the fetus. However, it is possible for cholesterol to increase significantly during pregnancy. This is called gestational hypercholesterolemia or maternal hypercholesterolemia.
Rapid weight loss-
One reason behind sudden increase in cholesterol level is rapid weight loss. In a 2019 study, three adults lost weight rapidly by following a very low-calorie diet. In all three cases, their LDL cholesterol increased temporarily before falling to normal levels. According to researchers, this may be to changes in metabolism.
In such a situation, if you want to lose weight, then it is important to talk to health care professionals so that you do not have to face any side effects, such as a sudden increase in cholesterol level.
