Actually, Aamir Khan played the character of Rancho (‘Phunsukh Wangdu’) in the film 3 Idiots, released about 17 years ago, till now it was believed that this character was based on Ladakh’s innovator Sonam Wangchuk. Meanwhile, actor Aamir Khan, who attended the London India Film Festival at the British Film Institute in London, was asked during a question-and-answer session with the audience that the character ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ from his famous film ‘3 Idiots’ was based on the innovator Wangchuk of Ladakh. To this the actor said, “No! Actually it is not true. It is a misunderstanding.” A video to this question and answer is becoming increasingly viral on social media.

He further added, “When we were making the film ‘3 Idiots’, I did not know about Mr. Sonam. I recently saw a video of Chatur in which he said, ‘No, he is wrong.’ Maybe Chatur is thinking the same, but I want to tell you that neither director Rajkumar Hirani, nor writer Abhijat Joshi nor me… none of us knew about Mr. Sonam.”

The Bollywood actor further said, “Well, the work that Mr. Sonam is doing is good work. To respect him, it is not necessary that he be like the character of ‘3 Idiots’.” When asked if this had already been made clear, Aamir again said, “Just based on the facts… Actually, Sonam ji had said this. She had also said that the character is not based on her.”

Aamir was also asked about Wangchuk’s hunger strike, which has now reached its 19th day. Expressing concern, Aamir said, “I think we all are worried about his health and his life. We hope everything goes well and we all want him to end his fast.”
