While the rainy season brings relief from the scorching heat, it also increases the risk of many diseases and infections. In this season, cases of stomach upset and urinary tract infection (UTI) increase rapidly. According to doctors, if UTI is not treated on time, this infection can spread upwards and directly affect your kidneys, which is called Kidney Infection. Although even healthy people should take special care of their health in this season, but some people are at greater risk than others. Let us understand from the country’s top health experts why the risk of kidney infection increases in monsoon, what are its main symptoms and which people need to be most cautious: Why does the risk of kidney infection increase in monsoon? (Main Causes) According to Dr. Manisha Arora, Director of Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, some of our daily carelessness during rainy days become the main cause of this infection: Drinking less water: Due to cold weather, people often reduce drinking water, which gives chance to bacteria to grow in the urinary tract. Holding urine: By holding urine for a long time, the number of bacteria in the bladder increases rapidly. Wearing wet clothes: Wearing wet clothes for a long time due to rain or moisture increases fungal and bacterial growth around the private parts. Lack of hygiene: Due to lack of proper attention to personal hygiene, the infection spreads upwards very easily. These people are at the highest risk of infection (High-Risk Groups). According to Dr. Anupam Roy, Additional Director of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Department of Aakash Healthcare, the risk of kidney infection is highest in people suffering from the following conditions: Diabetes and kidney stone patients: People who are suffering from diabetes or have kidney stones, they catch infection quickly. People with weak immunity: People who have weak immunity or who are taking medicines for any serious disease which reduce immunity. Urinary problems: Enlargement of the prostate gland, insertion of a urinary catheter or those who suffer from frequent UTIs. Women and pregnant women: Due to their physical structure, women are more prone to urine infection than men. Especially in pregnant women, this infection can reach the kidneys very quickly. Do not ignore these serious symptoms even by forgetting them (Warning Signs) Experts say that when the infection increases from simple UTI to the kidney, then these symptoms start appearing in the body: severe burning or pain while urinating and frequent urination. High fever accompanied by shivering (chills). Uncomfortable and sharp pain on one side of the back or waist (in the kidney area). Vomiting, nausea or feeling extreme physical weakness. Examination and treatment: If you notice any of these symptoms, contact a doctor immediately. Doctors usually recommend urine test (Routine & Culture) to detect infection and blood test to check the severity of infection. Timely treatment keeps you safe from major problems. 4 surefire ways to keep your kidneys and stomach safe during monsoon. Drink plenty of water: Always keep your body hydrated. Even if you feel less thirsty, drink sufficient amount of completely clean, boiled or filtered water throughout the day. Attention to cleanliness: Take full care of personal hygiene. After getting wet in the rain, take bath immediately and wear dry and clean cotton clothes. Distance from outside food: Completely avoid eating open market food, junk food or oily food during the rainy season, as these increase stomach infection. Wash vegetables thoroughly: In this season, soil and bacteria remain stuck on green leafy vegetables, which can cause stomach upset and increase pressure on the kidneys. Therefore, before cooking vegetables, clean them thoroughly with lukewarm water and include seasonal fruits in the diet.
