Just before the very important monsoon session of Parliament starting from 20th July 2026, the entire political equation and arithmetic of the country’s Upper House i.e. Rajya Sabha has completely changed. The internal discontent that started within the party after the crushing defeat of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly elections has now transformed into a major national political earthquake. The process of resignation of Rajya Sabha MPs of Trinamool Congress is showing no sign of stopping, the direct and major benefit of which seems to be going to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Center and especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Koel Malik’s shocking resignation: She left Rajya Sabha membership in just 105 days. The biggest and latest blow in this political drama came to TMC when the party’s Rajya Sabha MP and famous actress Rukmini Malik alias Koel Malik suddenly resigned from her post on Thursday. Koel Malik has probably become the leader who has been a Rajya Sabha member for the shortest period (just 105 days) in the parliamentary history of the country. She was elected to the Upper House on 3 April 2026 this year, but in this short period she did not participate in the proceedings of the House even for a single day. Soon after his resignation, Koel Malik met senior BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav in Delhi behind closed doors, due to which speculations in political circles about him soon joining BJP or joining the rebel group have reached its peak. Big rift in Trinamool Congress: 4 MPs left the party, 3 Before BJP candidate Koel Malik in the by-election, three more veteran TMC MPs – Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Badaik have also resigned from the membership of Rajya Sabha. These three rebel leaders had officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on July 9. BJP has strategically declared these three as its official candidates for the Rajya Sabha by-election from West Bengal to be held on 24 July 2026. Considering the strong numerical strength of BJP at present in the Bengal Assembly, the clean sweep and victory of BJP on all these three seats is considered completely certain. BJP will create history in Rajya Sabha: The strength will reach the record level of 117. After the results of the by-elections to be held on July 24, there is every possibility that the strength of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone in the Rajya Sabha will increase to 117, which will be the highest level so far in the entire parliamentary history of the party. After this historic lead, BJP will remain just 6 seats away from the magical figure of simple majority (123) in the Upper House. If the support of 7 nominated members of the House and 3 independent MPs like Parimal Nathwani, Dilip Ray and Karthikeya Sharma is added, then this figure easily reaches 127, which alone will give a simple majority to the BJP alliance. NDA comes close to two-thirds majority: Every trick of the opposition will fail. The ruling NDA is now eyeing to touch the two-thirds majority mark in the Rajya Sabha so that the opposition cannot overpower them on any important legislative and constitutional amendment agenda. Among NDA allies, TDP, AIADMK, JDU and NCP have 4 MPs each, while Shiv Sena and UPPL have 2 members each. Apart from this, the total number of allies reaches 26 by including 1 MP each from RPI(A), AGP, MNF, NPP, RLM and Janasena Party. In this way, including 127 MPs of BJP (including potential allies) and 26 MPs of allies, the total figure of NDA is going beyond 153, which is just 11 seats away from two-third majority (164). Mamta Banerjee isolated in Lok Sabha also: 20 rebels formed a new party. The crisis for Mamata Banerjee is not limited to Rajya Sabha only, but her strength in Lok Sabha too has reduced to half. 20 rebel TMC Lok Sabha MPs like Sudip Bandopadhyay and Kakali Ghosh Dastidar have separated from the party and formed a new faction named ‘NCPI’ and have extended their unconditional support from outside to the NDA government at the Centre. Due to this, the number of MPs loyal to Mamata Banerjee in the Lok Sabha has reduced to only 8. Responding sharply to this major breakdown, the TMC high command has said that those who are under fear and pressure from the central investigative agencies or the police can happily leave the party, this will not weaken the party.
