New Delhi: The long and agonising wait for thousands of teaching aspirants is finally drawing to a close. Twelve years after appearing for their initial examinations, 1,177 candidates are on the verge of finally securing their appointments, as the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) has released the detailed schedule and venue for the upcoming upper primary recruitment counseling.
The roots of this recruitment drive trace back to the 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for upper primary schools, where successful candidates formally entered the recruitment process in 2016. However, due to a mountain of legal disputes and administrative complexities, the counseling panel faced severe delays. In 2024, the commission managed to conduct eight rounds of counseling.
Despite those efforts, the process remained incomplete. The subsequent 2026 assembly elections and changes in the state government further stalled the recruitment of all vacant posts. While 12,723 candidates from the original merit list had managed to secure their appointments earlier, the recruitment of 1,241 candidates remained firmly stuck. Following recent court directives, the commission has cleared the deck to initiate counseling for 1,177 of those remaining vacancies, though 64 positions still remain on hold.
The counseling sessions for these 1,177 candidates will take place between July 21 and July 30. Candidates are required to report at Acharya Sadan in Bidhannagar by 10:30 AM on their respective designated dates. Having repeatedly knocked on the doors of both the High Court and the Supreme Court to fight for their rights, these candidates are finally on the threshold of entering their classrooms.
