New Delhi: A 21-year-old woman was killed in a brutal attack at the BC Road KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal, Karnataka, in what police suspect is a case of one-sided love.
The victim, identified as Lavanya, worked at a private nursing home in Kalladka and was returning home on Thursday evening. According to police, the accused, identified as Chetan, allegedly sat beside her on a bus before following her after she got off. When she attempted to flee, he allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon in a public area.
Lavanya sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Bantwal Taluk Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators said the accused and the victim were distant relatives and that Chetan had allegedly been pursuing Lavanya despite her rejection of his advances. Police are also examining reports that he had previously created a disturbance at her workplace about a month ago, although no formal complaint was filed at the time.
After the attack, the suspect allegedly fled in a car and is reported to have called the victim’s father, claiming responsibility for the killing. Acting on mobile phone data and CCTV footage, police tracked him down near Vamanjoor Pachchanadi on the outskirts of Mangaluru and took him into custody.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
