Aamir Khan speaking about Sonam Wangchuk has become one of the biggest talking points after the actor finally addressed the activist’s ongoing hunger strike. During his appearance at the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir spoke about Sonam Wangchuk’s health and also clarified a long-standing belief that his 3 Idiots character, Rancho, was inspired by the education reformer. While he denied the connection, Aamir said he hopes Sonam ends his fast soon.
Aamir Khan Clarifies, 3 Idiots Wasn’t Inspired By Sonam WangchukOn Thursday, Aamir Khan attended the closing ceremony of the London Indian Film Festival, where Lagaan was screened to mark 25 years of the film. During the post-screening interaction, the actor answered several audience questions, including one about Sonam Wangchuk.

For years, many have believed that Rancho from 3 Idiots was based on Sonam Wangchuk. However, Aamir said that wasn’t true.
He explained that neither he nor writers Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi knew Sonam Wangchuk when 3 Idiots was being made. Referring to recent comments made by Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur in the film, Aamir said the claim was factually incorrect.
At the same time, Aamir added that the clarification doesn’t take away from the work Sonam Wangchuk has done over the years. According to him, the activist deserves respect for his contribution, irrespective of whether he inspired a film character.
Aamir Khan On Sonam Wangchuk’s HealthAamir was also asked about Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing indefinite hunger strike.
Responding to the question, the actor said everyone is concerned about his health and hopes the situation ends positively. He also expressed hope that Sonam would call off his fast.

Omi Vaidya Previously Said Funsukh Wangdu Was Inspired By Sonam Wangchuk.Earlier this week, Omi Vaidya shared a video supporting Sonam Wangchuk. In the clip, he claimed that Aamir Khan’s character Funsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk’s life. He also urged people to pay attention to the activist’s declining health and the issues he is protesting for.
More About Sonam Wangchuk’s ProtestSonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since June 28. He joined the protest launched by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which began over the alleged NEET examination controversy and has now expanded into a greater demand for examination reforms.
The protesters are demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation and have also proposed a five-point roadmap for changes to the examination system.
Sonam Wangchuk has refused to end his fast despite repeated appeals. According to the latest health update, he remains under medical supervision and has lost considerable weight since beginning the hunger strike. He has instead urged people to join the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20, when the Monsoon Session of Parliament begins.
His protest has also received support from several actors, including Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker, Anurag Kashyap, Sonakshi Sinha, Atul Kulkarni, Sayaji Shinde, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Prakash Raj.
