Chelsea were compelled to remove a social media post involving Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez after controversy erupted online.

Enzo Fernandez has reposted a social media update after seemingly adding insult to injury for England fans in the aftermath of Argentina’s World Cup semi-final victory.

The Chelsea star played a decisive role in Argentina’s triumph over England on Wednesday night at the Atlanta Stadium, scoring a crucial equaliser in the 85th minute — his second goal of the tournament — before his team went on to secure the win.

As emotions ran high amidst one of international football’s most enduring rivalries, Fernandez celebrated passionately, cupping his ears and gesturing as if to mimic people talking. While it was not entirely clear whether his celebration was directed at England supporters, it is likely to attract a hostile reception from Premier League fans next season.

Later, Fernandez shared a post on Instagram featuring himself alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes, accompanied by the Oasis track ‘Wonderwall’.

The three Argentine players were seen laughing together, which many interpreted as a deliberate attempt to mock England after ending their hopes of reaching the World Cup 2026 final.

‘Wonderwall’ had become closely associated with the England squad’s World Cup journey, as players frequently gathered to sing it with fans following matches across North America.

Following significant online criticism, Fernandez has since reposted the same image — this time without any reference to the song.

The midfielder’s club, Chelsea, also faced backlash for a tweet shared from their official X account (formerly Twitter) congratulating Fernandez on reaching consecutive World Cup finals. The post was soon deleted after supporters expressed anger over its timing and tone.

Fernandez, 25, is now preparing to start for Argentina against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, as his team aims to become only the third nation — after Italy and Brazil — to successfully defend the trophy.
