Former Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran is set to make a surprising comeback to European football, with Benfica reportedly close to finalising a loan deal with Al-Nassr for the Colombian international. The 22-year-old has found it difficult to settle in Saudi Arabia since his big-money transfer from Aston Villa, prompting all sides to pursue a move before the new season begins.

Duran close to Benfica move

Portuguese heavyweights Benfica are reportedly nearing completion of a loan agreement for Jhon Duran from Al-Nassr, as reported by local outlet A Bola. The 22-year-old Colombian striker is expected to join the Estadio da Luz side on a temporary deal from the Saudi Pro League club. To make the move possible, Al-Nassr’s management has agreed to subsidise most of Duran’s substantial salary package.

End of Saudi struggles

According to reports, Al-Nassr CEO Jose Semedo has given Duran the go-ahead this week to secure a new club in order to revive his career. The former Aston Villa attacker joined Al-Nassr in January 2025 for a fee of €77 million on a contract worth approximately €20 million per year, valid until 2030. However, his time in Saudi Arabia has been disappointing, as he managed only 18 appearances across domestic and continental tournaments.

Unsuccessful loan experiences

Before moving to Portugal, Duran – who has earned 17 caps for the Colombia national team – endured difficult loan spells at Fenerbahce and Zenit St Petersburg. His stint in Russia was marred by disciplinary problems, which led to his exclusion from the first-team setup. The lack of consistent club football took a toll on his international career, resulting in his omission from Colombia’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Medical and introduction in Lisbon

Duran is expected to arrive in Lisbon in the coming days to undergo his medical tests before officially signing with Marco Silva’s squad. Once the move is completed, he will immediately join Benfica’s pre-season training sessions to familiarise himself with the team’s tactical structure.

His addition is anticipated to strengthen Benfica’s attacking options as they prepare for a challenging season in both domestic competitions and the Champions League league stage.
