The 2026 FIFA World Cup will conclude on Sunday with France taking on Argentina in the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.
The match is expected to attract numerous heads of state, dignitaries, and prominent figures from the sporting world. However, Argentina’s president Javier Milei will not be present.
Although known for his love of sports, United States President Donald Trump has largely stayed away from this World Cup. He chose not to attend any of the five matches played by the United States, who were eliminated in the round of 16.
Nonetheless, Trump has been involved in some controversy surrounding the tournament. Before it began, he threatened to remove matches from host stadiums located in Democrat-run cities. He also made calls to FIFA before USMNT striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension was quietly lifted ahead of the round of 16.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who shares a close friendship with Trump, faced calls for his resignation following that incident.
Last year, Trump made headlines when he refused to step off the stage after presenting Chelsea with the Club World Cup trophy. The crowd booed him loudly, and he appeared to exchange words with players Reece James and Cole Palmer during the presentation.
This weekend, Trump is set to reprise his role in trophy presentation duties.
The White House has officially confirmed that President Trump will attend the World Cup final. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Thursday, “We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending. This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.”
FIFA President Infantino has also confirmed that Trump will present the World Cup trophy to the winning team. “That’s always been the plan,” he said. “That’s how it’s always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president.”
