Jude Bellingham has called on England supporters to keep their remarkable sense of togetherness following the Three Lions’ painful 2-1 loss to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. The 23-year-old midfielder confessed that he found it difficult to articulate his emotions after the match but later shared an inspiring poem given to him by the team’s driver, Michael Chandler.

Bellingham reflects on England’s World Cup exit

The Real Madrid star admitted he struggled to find the right words to convey his disappointment after England’s elimination by Argentina in the World Cup semi-final held in Atlanta. Thomas Tuchel’s men had briefly taken the lead through Anthony Gordon’s strike in the 55th minute, before late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez turned the game in Argentina’s favour.

Bellingham, who had an outstanding tournament with six goals to his name, later posted an emotional message to fans on social media.

A plea for unity

Posting on his official Instagram account, Bellingham revealed a touching poem written by the team’s bus driver, Chandler, saying it perfectly expressed his emotions during their stay in Kansas. “Was really struggling to find the right words for yesterday and the last few weeks but this pretty much hits the nail on the head from our driver in Kansas,” Bellingham wrote.

The former Birmingham City prodigy added: “Thank you for the unbelievable support from back home and to those who spent their hard-earned money to travel to America and get behind us. Don’t let the unity and love we’ve seen in our country end with this campaign. When we’re together, we can achieve great things... and we will!”

The inspiring poem in full

The long poem by Chandler, shared by Bellingham, emphasised the importance of mental strength, self-discipline, and unity when confronting challenges on the field. It spoke of courage, perseverance, teamwork, and self-mastery as the true measure of victory, rather than medals or applause. The poem urged the players to stay composed, trust their preparation, and find strength within, reflecting the core values that carried England through their World Cup journey.

Potential disciplinary action looms

England must now refocus on their upcoming third-place play-off clash against France in Miami. However, Bellingham faces possible suspension following an investigation by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The probe concerns an alleged incident in which the midfielder reportedly slapped Argentina’s Valentin Barco, behaviour deemed as violent conduct. If found guilty, Tuchel will have to manage the play-off without his key midfield presence before the squad returns to Europe.
