Speculation continues over Jack Grealish’s future, but Joleon Lescott has confirmed to GOAL that there have been “no conversations” about a potential move to Major League Soccer (MLS). For now, the Manchester City winger is focused on reviving his career at the Etihad Stadium or possibly making his loan stint at Everton permanent.
From treble triumph to Everton loan: Grealish’s journey at Man City
Grealish became the most expensive player in British football when he completed a £100 million ($135 million) move from Aston Villa to Manchester City in the summer of 2021. Pep Guardiola brought him in to add flair and creativity to the team’s attack.
Although his natural playmaking instincts were somewhat restrained under Guardiola’s tactical demands, the 2022-23 season proved hugely successful for Grealish as City clinched a remarkable treble — winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.
Despite his key contributions, Grealish managed just 17 goals across 157 appearances for City. As competition for attacking places intensified, he was allowed to move on loan to Everton in 2025. He started brightly on Merseyside, earning an early Player of the Month award, but a foot injury in January sidelined him for the remainder of the season, ending his hopes of featuring in the World Cup for England.
Fresh opportunity or permanent switch: What lies ahead this summer?
With Enzo Maresca set to begin a new era at Manchester City following Guardiola’s departure after a decade in charge, all players will be given a chance to impress the new manager. Grealish could yet reintegrate into City’s plans.
Alternatively, Everton may pursue a permanent deal if an affordable agreement can be reached. Discussing the situation, former City and Everton defender Joleon Lescott, speaking via VladCasino, told GOAL: “Whatever happens, whether it’s at Everton or City, it’s a fresh start.”
He continued, “A new manager gives him the chance to show his hunger and love for the game. No one can question his passion. Knowing Jack, he’s a true student of football and loves it deeply. Wherever he ends up, fans will see an exciting version of Jack because he still has so much to give — not to prove, but to progress and keep playing.”
Lescott added, “Missing out on World Cup selection will have hurt him, and I’m sure he still dreams of representing England again.”
MLS rumours dismissed: Grealish focused on Premier League ambitions
Grealish turns 31 in September but still has plenty to offer at the highest level — both in the Premier League and potentially for the England national team, for whom he has already earned 39 caps. With a home European Championship coming up in 2028, the Birmingham-born midfielder remains motivated.
Continuing to play regularly in the Premier League should help him stay in contention for England duty, and any move away from top-flight football appears unlikely in the near term. Although a future move to North America could one day be on the cards, that isn’t part of his current plans.
Lescott explained further: “I haven’t seen any genuine links. I don’t know if it’s just speculation, but having spoken to Jack, there have been no discussions about MLS or going abroad.”
He added, “With full respect to other leagues, his goal is to compete at the highest level and continue representing England.”
Contract situation: Decision time at Manchester City
Grealish’s current six-year deal with Manchester City has only 12 months remaining, meaning crucial decisions must be made in the coming weeks over his future.
After enjoying his time at Everton and facing stiff competition for places back at City, a permanent transfer could be the most practical solution before the transfer window closes on September 1.
