Pakistan: Pakistan is constantly in the news due to economic crisis, IMF loan and cut in government expenditure. In this case, recently released records regarding the salaries of senior constitutional and government officials have presented an interesting picture. According to records, the annual salary of the current Auditor General of Pakistan, Maqbool Ahmed Gondal, is Pakistani Rupees 9768,240, which is equivalent to Rs 814,000 (Basic Salary Rs 772,000, plus other allowances) per month. This salary is much more than the salary of Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Although the salary of the President of Pakistan is high, but President Asif Ali Zardari has decided not to take his salary citing the poor economic condition of the country. As a result, Auditors General regularly top the list of highest paid government officials.
According to the recently released official salary record, the monthly basic salary of the Auditor General of Pakistan is 772,780 Pakistani rupees. By adding various allowances, this amount becomes approximately ₹ 814,020 every month. This salary is ₹ 9768,240 on annual basis. Currently Maqbool Ahmed Gondal is on this post. The Auditor General is a constitutional post responsible for auditing government expenditure in Pakistan and ensuring financial accountability before the Parliament. Therefore, it is considered one of the most important constitutional offices of the country.
What is the job of Auditor General?
The work of the Auditor General is more than just auditing government accounts. This office audits the expenses of the Central Government, Ministries, Government Companies and Public Institutions. It also checks whether the tax revenue has been used as per the rules or not. The audit report is presented in Parliament, on the basis of which government departments are asked to respond.
Why doesn’t the President take salary?
In March 2024, President Asif Ali Zardari announced that he would not take a presidential salary during his tenure. The President’s Secretariat said that in view of the economic challenges of the country, they have decided not to put further burden on the exchequer. He said that this step was taken to give the message of financial discipline and savings.
Debate increased amid economic crisis
Pakistan has been struggling with challenges like inflation, lack of foreign exchange reserves and IMF program for a long time. At such times, there is often public debate about the salaries of government officials. After the President’s decision to give up his salary and the subsequent revelation of the Auditor General’s high salary, this issue has once again become a topic of discussion. However, it is important to note that the salary of the Auditor General is determined within the constitutional framework and service rules, and the objective is to maintain the autonomy of this independent constitutional body.
