New Delhi: Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz has once again become a center of global concern. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has made a big claim after the incident of fire in two oil tankers. Iran says that there was no attack on these ships, rather they were passing through a minefield, due to which the explosion occurred.
On the other hand, America alleges that Iranian forces are targeting ships in the area. The contradictory claims of both the countries have made the situation more tense.
IRGC claims- Ships sent on wrong route
According to Iranian state media, the IRGC said that both oil tankers had been warned in advance not to enter the minefield area. Despite this, the ships allegedly proceeded along the same route where landmines were present.
Iran alleges that American agencies showed the ships a dangerous route instead of a safe one, due to which the accident occurred. However, these claims of Iran have not yet been confirmed by any independent international agency or the countries that own the respective ships.
Danger increased in Hormuz
The IRGC says that there remains a serious threat in some parts of the Strait of Hormuz and movement there has been limited. Iran claims that any ship that ignores safety warnings can become a victim of a major accident. For this reason, a decision has been taken to keep sensitive sea routes closed.
Warning of impact on oil and gas supply
Iran has also said that as long as US military action continues in the region, safe movement of oil and gas from Hormuz will not be possible. Iranian officials say that their navy is monitoring the situation and strict measures will be taken if necessary.
Vigilance increased in Gulf countries also
Meanwhile, security arrangements have also been tightened in the Gulf area. Kuwait has claimed that it has monitored suspicious drones coming from the direction of Iran. Sirens were sounded in Bahrain as a precaution, while Saudi Arabia has advised its citizens to remain alert.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. In such a situation, the increasing tension here can also affect global energy supply and international trade. At present, independent confirmation of the truth between the claims of both the countries is awaited.
