James Harden sends open message to LeBron James amid Cleveland Cavaliers rumors
The Times Of India | July 18, 2026 1:39 PM CST

James Harden made his pitch for LeBron James to join the Cleveland Cavaliers, telling reporters at Fanatics Fest on Friday that he hopes the four-time champion picks Cleveland in free agency. The comments add another voice to a growing list of players and executives publicly courting James , whose decision remains unresolved more than two weeks into his free agency search.

The timing matters because Harden himself is a free agent after declining his player option, and his own next contract may be tied to how much financial flexibility Cleveland needs to make a run at James.

James Harden wants to play alongside LeBron James in the Cleveland Cavaliers

Speaking at the fan convention, Harden didn't hold back on what he'd like to see happen. "I hope he comes to Cleveland," Harden said, framing it as a fitting way for James to close out his career close to home. He added that he doesn't expect any single pitch to sway James one way or another, saying the decision ultimately belongs to James alone, but that whichever team lands him will instantly get better.

Harden's interest goes beyond nostalgia. According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Harden is reportedly holding off on signing his own new deal with Cleveland specifically to preserve cap space that could help the Cavs pursue James. That's a notable show of patience from a player who could otherwise lock in his next contract immediately.

Why is LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers rumor gaining traction?

James has deep roots in Cleveland. The Akron, Ohio native was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft and delivered the franchise's only championship in 2016 during his second stint with the team. He later signed with the Los Angeles Lakers , and after eight seasons there, he's now weighing his next move as a 24th NBA season approaches.

The Cavaliers already have pieces in place that make the fit appealing. Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen give James an established core coming off a trip to the conference finals, even after the sweep at the hands of the Knicks. Cleveland also plays in the Eastern Conference, generally viewed as an easier path than the West.

What happens next in LeBron James' free agency

James has been linked to other teams as well. He has golfed with Golden State's Draymond Green, referenced the Philadelphia 76ers' old "trust the process" mantra during Fanatics Fest, and stayed in contact through agent Rich Paul with Miami president Pat Riley. None of those signals carry the same weight as his history with Cleveland, but they show James is genuinely exploring multiple options rather than treating this as a formality.

Whether James and Harden could mesh on the court remains an open question, since both are ball dominant playmakers who typically need the rock in their hands to be most effective. For now, Harden has made his preference clear. What James ultimately decides is still anyone's guess.
