Mumbai, July 18: The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has expressed strong disapproval of the central government's treatment of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, accusing it of neglect and defamation.

In an editorial featured in the party's publication, Saamana, the party highlighted that Wangchuk, along with a student named Neha, has been on a hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for 21 days. They are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to the NEET-UG question paper leak scandal.

The editorial passionately defended Wangchuk, noting his journey from Ladakh to New Delhi to advocate for the nation. It also criticized the alleged corporate land grabbing in Ladakh, asserting that it threatens the region's delicate tribal ecosystem.

According to the editorial, Wangchuk's activism has made him a target for PM Modi, stating, "In independent India, fighting for one's rights has become a crime." It emphasized that Wangchuk's struggle resonates with all citizens.

The Thackeray faction also condemned BJP leaders for attempting to tarnish the reputation of Ramon Magsaysay and Padma awardee Sonam Wangchuk. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari was specifically called out for labeling Wangchuk as part of the "Aam Aadmi gang" and an impediment to India's progress.

In response to Tiwari's comments, the editorial criticized his background in Bhojpuri cinema and accused the ruling party of harboring individuals who rationalize corruption, even referencing the controversies surrounding the Ram Temple funds. It also reminded readers of the BJP's previous alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party during Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption protests in New Delhi.

The editorial underscored the severity of the NEET paper leak, noting that it has plunged millions of students into despair, leading to 20 to 25 reported suicides.

"Under this regime, human life has become insignificant. Whether students, farmers, or soldiers, this government remains indifferent to their suffering," the editorial stated.

It further mentioned that medical professionals have raised alarms about Neha's health, yet the government has shown no compassion.

The Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, contrasted PM Modi's international engagements with his lack of concern for domestic issues. The editorial mocked the Prime Minister for his travels abroad while neglecting to support a dying activist just a short distance from his home.

The Thackeray camp praised Wangchuk for his significant contributions to national security, particularly his development of solar-powered insulated tents that keep Indian soldiers warm in extreme cold conditions at high-altitude borders.

In a concluding warning, the editorial likened the current "arrogance and cruelty" of the BJP to historical tyrants, asserting that such hubris ultimately leads to downfall. "The BJP's inflated ego regarding Wangchuk’s hunger strike will meet a similar fate," it concluded.
