Supreme Court's Upcoming Hearing on Ram Temple Donation Case
The Supreme Court is set to review multiple petitions on July 20, which demand a fair and timely investigation into alleged misappropriation of donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
According to the court's cause list, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan will hear four distinct petitions related to this matter. On July 13, the court agreed to hear the petitions and requested a status report from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe the case. The bench also issued a notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, seeking a response.
In its order dated July 13, the court noted that some writ petitions indicated that certain FIRs had already been filed and that an SIT had been established for the investigation. Therefore, the court directed the SIT formed by the Uttar Pradesh government to present a status report before it.
Petitioners Demand CBI Investigation
One of the petitioners, Narendra Kumar Goswami, has called for a CBI investigation into the matter. He has also requested an audit of the finances of the 'Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust' by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which oversees the trust managing the temple's operations. Another petition filed by Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav seeks an investigation led by a CBI multi-disciplinary SIT into alleged financial irregularities and other illegal activities associated with the temple trust.
A third petition from RJD MP Sudhakar Singh demands a CBI investigation under the Supreme Court's supervision and a forensic audit of the trust's entire financial operations. Additionally, a separate petition from the Hindu Religious Council has requested an investigation into these allegations under the Supreme Court's oversight.
Formation of SIT and Next Steps
Following the allegations of embezzlement concerning donations to the Ram Temple, the Uttar Pradesh government established the SIT on June 13 at the request of the temple trust. The SIT includes Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S, and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan. The court will hear the petitions on July 20 after receiving the SIT's status report and the trust's response.
