India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the decider ODI against England scheduled to be played at lords on Sunday. However the Allrounder said the opportunity to play different roles across formats continues to motivate him as he looks to contribute in whatever way the team requires.
Washington played a key role in India's six-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI at Edgbaston, scoring a fighting half-century during the chase to help the visitors register their first win of the UK tour after defeats in the T20I series against Ireland and England. However in the second ODI he fell cheaply to saqib Mahmood & devoid of oppourtunity to roll arms. Reflecting on his role in the Indian team, Washington said the demands of playing across formats have pushed him to constantly improve his game.'The fact that I play different roles (across formats) is exciting. Not many people get to play different roles.'I get to play those different roles and be in different situations, and obviously try my best to help the team win. Over the years I have understood that I've to keep improving my skillsets which will help me whenever the situation arrives (across formats),' he added. Washington also highlighted the value of all-rounders in modern-day cricket after Axar starred with both bat and ball in Birmingham. 'It is a blessing for me to be an all-rounder. Any team would love to have as many all-rounders as possible because you can play according to the conditions and it is always nice to have different varieties.'You'll never feel like you're short of options especially in any conditions since we play a lot of cricket around the world and the conditions are quite different.'
