The Cotswolds has long been one of Britain’s most beloved destinations, attracting visitors with its honey-coloured stone buildings, picturesque streets, and quiet luxury. However, travellers looking for a similar countryside escape this summer may not need to go to the packed villages in Gloucestershire.

The country lifestyle experts at Welligogs say that Cowbridge is one of Wales’ most beautiful small towns, offering many of the same qualities as the Cotswolds. Located in the Vale of Glamorgan, Cowbridge is known for its historic high street, independent boutiques, and beautiful countryside.

“Many people automatically think of the Cotswolds when they imagine a classic British market town, but Cowbridge offers a very similar feel in the heart of South Wales,” says Tess Annan, manager at Welligogs.

“Cowbridge has that same sense of elegance and ease, where independent shops, cafés, and historic buildings all sit together in a really relaxed and welcoming environment.”

“Another part of Cowbridge’s appeal is its balance of tradition and modern living. Visit the 18th century Cowbridge Physic Garden or the romantic ruins of Old Beauxpre Castle. If you fancy some sea air, you can head to the beaches on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.”

The town is 12 miles west of Cardiff. It is one of very few medieval walled towns in Wales, and substantial portions of the walls, together with the south gate, are still standing.

Tess notes that there is growing interest in destinations that offer the charm of famous hotspots, but with a more relaxed and less commercial feel.

She said: “Cowbridge is a great example. It has all the character people associate with the Cotswolds, but with a distinctly Welsh identity and far fewer crowds. It feels like a real find.”

The town doesn’t have a train station of its own, but there is Bridgend Station six miles away, and Cardiff Central Station 13 miles away. Both are on the train line between Swansea and London Paddington.
