Manchester United began their summer pre-season campaign with a 1-0 loss to Wrexham AFC in Helsinki, Finland.
The match started with intensity as Harry Maguire delighted the Finnish spectators by launching a strong early challenge. After 10 minutes, Sam Smith tested United goalkeeper Tom Heaton, but his shot was comfortably saved—and the flag went up for offside.
Neither side managed to impose themselves in the opening minutes, though Wrexham appeared slightly sharper. In the 17th minute, United had a fleeting opportunity when the ball broke to Jack Fletcher on the edge of the box, but he failed to make proper contact. Moments later, Bailey Cadamarteri tried his luck inside the penalty area, only for Ayden Heaven to make a superb sliding block.
United began to find their rhythm midway through the half. Joshua Zirkzee came close in the 24th minute, sending a first-time effort just wide of the post. Despite increasing possession and control, the Premier League side lacked cutting edge in front of goal. Wrexham’s Nathan Broadhead responded with a long-range strike that sailed harmlessly over.
Michael Carrick’s new signing, Andrey Santos, impressed on the ball, displaying the boundless energy that prompted United to bring him in. The Red Devils nearly went ahead when Sam Smith’s header from a corner rattled the crossbar. However, after 39 minutes, Wrexham capitalised on a defensive lapse to take the lead. Lewis O’Brien neatly squared the ball across the box for an unmarked Smith, who tapped in from close range to make it 1-0. United retained plenty of the ball but rarely troubled Arthur Okonkwo in the Wrexham goal before the halftime whistle confirmed their deficit.
Second Half
United emerged for the second half with a completely changed lineup featuring several academy graduates eager to make an impression. The young Red Devils maintained possession well but struggled to penetrate Wrexham’s defence. Dan Armer lofted a clever ball over the top, but Ethan Wheatley couldn’t beat his marker. Wrexham then threatened when George Dobson raced clear one-on-one, but Radek Vitek stood tall to deny him.
In the 72nd minute, United produced their best moment of the half as Dan Gore darted down the flank and whipped a dangerous ball across goal, only for Danny Ward to gather it calmly. Harry Amass later sent in a teasing cross that found Wheatley, but the youngster’s header lacked power. Shea Lacey soon followed up with a shot straight at the keeper.
As stoppage time approached, Ethan Williams delivered a dangerous cross from the left, but no one was able to convert. The final whistle sounded with United suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat to their Championship opponents, marking a frustrating start to their pre-season schedule.
