New Delhi. Gitanjali Angmo, wife of social activist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, has raised serious questions on the functioning of Safdarjung Hospital. He said that he has lost confidence in Safdarjung Government Hospital. He has also filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding immediate hearing in the matter.

Geetanjali claimed that the hospital had told her that Sonam Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped to 2.9 and described it as a worrying and life-threatening condition. However, the public health bulletin issued by the hospital did not share the actual figure and only said that potassium levels were decreasing. He also claimed that testing by an independent laboratory found the potassium level to be 3.5, which is within normal limits.
About 30 policemen outside the ward
He alleged that despite repeated requests, the hospital administration is not allowing Sonam Wangchuk to be discharged or transferred to a private hospital of her choice. According to him, around 30 policemen are deployed outside the ward and more than 100 policemen are deployed in the entire hospital premises, limiting their movement. He called this not medical care but ‘illegal detention’.

Geetanjali said that if any untoward incident happens to Sonam Wangchuk, the entire responsibility of it will be on the hospital administration and the government. He told that for this reason he has approached the Delhi High Court and demanded an immediate hearing in the matter. The petition requests the court to allow Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted to a private hospital of her choice before her health deteriorates further. Gitanjali said no family should be forced to fight the system for the right to choose the hospital for their loved one’s treatment.
