The anti-corruption initiative led by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu gained momentum following the suspension of seven officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). These suspensions were accompanied by the filing of FIRs against the officials for alleged corruption and unaccounted financial transactions. This decisive action was taken after a surprise inspection last week in two zones of Chennai, where officials were reportedly found with unaccounted cash and questionable digital transactions.

According to GCC officials, the inspections were conducted in Zones 6 and 9, covering several key areas in North and Central Chennai. A senior GCC official informed a Media House that during the unexpected checks, an Assistant Executive Engineer failed to provide information regarding a ₹2.39 lakh GPay transaction. The suspensions and subsequent criminal actions were initiated following a report received from the Tamil Nadu Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate (DVAC).

Officials revealed that cases have been registered against the accused under anti-corruption laws, and departmental actions are also underway. Zone 6 includes areas like Kolathur, Ayanavaram, and Perambur, while Zone 9 encompasses parts of Central Chennai, including Thousand Lights, Mylapore, and Nungambakkam. This recent action comes just days after six other GCC officials were suspended due to various allegations related to bribery, fake billing, and money-for-jobs schemes. Should the departmental investigation substantiate the allegations, the officials may face severe penalties, including termination from service.
