Kohima, July 19: A devastating landslide in Nagaland's Mon district has resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals, with many others potentially trapped following heavy rainfall that caused flash floods and landslides on Sunday. The severe weather has led to significant damage to homes, inundation of local areas, and disruption of road access.

Rescue teams have successfully retrieved the bodies of a man and a woman from the rubble, while search efforts continue in the district headquarters town for additional victims.

Officials are concerned that the death toll may increase, as reports suggest that several individuals might still be buried under the landslide debris.

According to Johnny Ruangmei, the Joint Chief Executive Officer of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the intense rainfall since early Sunday has resulted in severe waterlogging and flash floods, with landslides obstructing critical roads and hindering traffic throughout the district.

Despite challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain, rescue operations are ongoing.

Teams from various agencies, including the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, Assam Rifles, and others, are actively involved in the search and rescue missions.

Families from the most affected regions have been relocated to safer areas, and the administration has begun implementing relief measures.

Nagaland's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating that the state government is vigilantly monitoring the situation. He conveyed his condolences to those who have lost family members and assured that the government would provide immediate financial assistance to the victims' families, although he did not specify the amount.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also shared his condolences and promised support for those impacted by the disaster, emphasizing that the state government is closely overseeing the situation and coordinating search, rescue, and relief efforts.

He stated, "We stand with the people of Mon and will extend every possible assistance."

In light of the ongoing risks, the district administration has issued warnings advising residents to steer clear of landslide-prone areas, riverbanks, and regions affected by flooding, as forecasts predict continued rainfall in the coming days.

This latest disaster occurs during an active monsoon season in the Northeast, where numerous states have experienced floods, landslides, and other weather-related challenges in recent weeks.
