Lucknow. In a major and strict change in the immigration rules, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has fixed the maximum period of stay in the US for holders of F-1 student visa, J-1 exchange visitor and I visa issued for foreign journalists to four years. This move is expected to have a direct impact on millions of Indian students and professionals, which has increased their concern considerably.
What is the new rule?
Under the new policy, most foreign students and exchange visitors will now be allowed to stay in the US only for the duration of their prescribed academic course or program and this period will be limited to a maximum of four years at a time. The same rule will also apply to foreign media personnel coming on I visa. This rule is to be effective from September 15, 2026, although it is still pending review by the US Congress.
What did India say?
Amid the changing rules, the Indian government has said that it is keeping a close eye on the matter and is in constant talks with Washington to protect the interests of its citizens. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is in touch with the US government and will continue to raise its voice in favor of genuine students and travelers facing hardships due to the policy changes. He also clarified that it is the sovereign right of every country to make rules to visa and immigration.
Experts expressed concern
According to media reports, Daniel Goldman, co-founder and CEO of Build Talent Labs, has warned that this change in student visa rules will increase huge financial burden and administrative difficulties on students of many countries including India. They now have to get jobs and employer sponsorships more quickly than ever before.
