Islamabad: Pakistan’s cybercrime authority has summoned Noreen Niazi, sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, who told social media sites to share “false, offensive and inflammatory” posts about him to defame state institutions and “spread false narratives.” The notice followed a video of Niazi’s interview going viral.

In that interview, Niazi said the May 2025 military standoff between India and Pakistan happened because Pakistan’s military leadership and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were working together. She claimed the whole thing was staged to make the Pakistani armed forces look good. She also questioned how Pakistan responded to India during the four-day conflict that followed the Pahalgam terror attack last year.

The National Cyber ​​Crime Investigation Agency issued the summons on Saturday. It has called on Niazi to appear at its Islamabad office on Monday. The notice said she had been found circulating false and defamatory content. The content is alleged to be aimed at the state institutions and contains fake narratives.

In the interview, Niazi also downplayed the Pakistani military’s response to India. He claimed, again without committing to any facts, that India held back from escalating the conflict because Pakistan was moving toward recognizing Israel, and that the whole episode was meant to help Pakistan join the Abraham Accords. Pakistan has no diplomatic ties with Israel and does not recognize it. The Abraham Accords are a bunch of US-drafted deals that established diplomatic as well as economic and security relations between Israel and a handful of Arab countries including the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

“What is your feeling about it?” asked Niazi in the interview. “It’sa big country. Was it in no position to respond when Pakistan attacked on the 10th of May? It could have but deliberately stayed back on some agreement.”

Her remarks attracted a harsh rebuttal from Azma Bokhari, Punjab’s Minister for Information and Culture belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. Bokhari said Niazi’s claim reflected the mindset of her brother, Imran Khan. She also said his family has always appeared uncomfortable with Pakistan’s recent accomplishments. She expressed regret that his remarks were contrary to national interest and that Niazi’s support of Modi was deplorable.

And so the interview ended up doing two things at once. It got a direct response from the cybercrime agency, and it got a fierce political jab from the Punjab government.
