Taking advantage of America’s relaxation in oil sanctions, Iran has sent out crude oil worth about $5 to $6 billion in just one month. ‘The Wall Street Journal’ has made this claim quoting ‘United Against Nuclear Iran’ (UANI) and oil market experts.
In fact, after a temporary agreement between the two countries on June 17, America had lifted the ban on Iranian ships. After this, from the last week of June, about 20 Iranian oil tankers started reaching the sea near the east coast of Malaysia. Iran was using all its strength to take out the huge stock of oil stuck in its country at any cost.
China was the real destination
According to experts, the final destination of this oil was China. The first tanker to leave Tehran (Iran) was ‘Diona’, followed by tankers like ‘Hero II’, ‘Sonia I’ and ‘The Stream’.
How is ‘fielding’ done to avoid sanctions?
To throw dust in the eyes of American sanctions, Iran adopted its old and tested method. Iranian tankers dock outside Malaysia’s maritime jurisdiction (known as the ‘Eastern Outer Port Limits’), located between Iran and China.
There, oil is transferred from Iranian ships to other tankers through huge pipes (hoses) in the middle of the sea. After this, these other tankers move towards China’s private refineries (which are called ‘teapot’ refineries there). These refineries buy this oil from Iran at huge discounts. Due to this exchange of oil in the sea, it becomes very difficult for the American authorities to control the smuggling of Iranian oil.
Iran showed amazing speed
As soon as US sanctions were lifted under the agreement on June 17, tankers laden with oil at Iran’s eastern Chabahar port rapidly turned towards Asia. According to ‘United Against Nuclear Iran’, in the last fifteen days of June alone, Iran had shipped about 50 million barrels of oil to China, which is equal to the normal monthly export to China before the war.
Between mid-June and mid-July, as long as the sanctions were in place, Iran supplied a total of about 70 million barrels of crude oil. Its total value has been estimated between 5 to 6 billion dollars (about Rs 41 thousand crore to Rs 50 thousand crore).
Jonathan Panikoff, Middle East Expert (Atlantic Council) says, ‘Iran’s economy is currently going through its worst phase, so every dollar matters for it. The Iranian government will use this income for its strategic needs, the foremost of which is to take a stand against America.
Experts say that the way the consignment of Iranian ships reached Asia in July, Iran will get billions of dollars in revenue in the coming months. UANI analyst Charlie Brown, based in Singapore, said, ‘If America had not lifted this sanction, Iran would have suffered a major blow on the economic front at this time. But as soon as the blockade was lifted, Iran immediately sent a huge amount of oil out, which has once again provided it with great economic relief.
However, America has now once again tightened its blockade on the ‘Strait of Hormuz’, due to which Iran’s oil exports have once again come to a halt.
