How many road accidents occur in India every year? How ‘these’ smart technologies of automobiles can prevent the number of accidents? find out

The statistics of road accidents in India are becoming alarming day by day. According to the ‘Road Accidents in India 2024’ report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as many as 4,87,707 road accidents took place in the country in one year. In one year, 1,77,177 people lost their lives in these gruesome accidents, while more than 4.71 lakh people were injured. It means that there are 1,336 accidents and 485 deaths on an average in India every day. Shockingly, high speed and human error accounted for the highest proportion of these accidents, nearly 70.3% of deaths. And 19 percent of them lose their lives due to hit & runs. Smart technologies such as ADAS and LiDAR in the automobile sector can play a very important role in preventing this death spree. As such,

1. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

This technology alerts the driver by constantly monitoring what is happening around the vehicle and corrects human error,

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB): If a vehicle or pedestrian suddenly comes in front on the highway and the driver does not apply the brakes in time, this system automatically applies the brakes and stops the car. This can reduce rear-end collisions and pedestrian accidents by up to 50 percent.

Lane Keep Assist (Lane Keep Assist): If the car drifts out of lane due to drowsiness or inattention, this technology takes control of the steering and returns the car to a safe lane.

2. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)

This sensor technology is a milestone in preventing accidents at night or in bad weather,

3D Laser Vision: Lidar technology uses laser beams to create an accurate 3D map of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Effective in darkness and fog: Traditional cameras fail in the dark of night or in dense fog, but lidar can accurately measure the distance of an object in front even in such conditions. This helps prevent accidents by recognizing obstacles or pedestrians on the highway at night.

According to the 2024 report of MoRTH, the accident severity has reached 36.3%, which means accidents are becoming more fatal. If advanced safety features such as ADAS and LiDAR are mandated in new vehicles in India at this time, human error accidents and road accident deaths can be reduced to a great extent.
