New Delhi: Spain celebrated a historic FIFA World Cup 2026 triumph after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium. Ferran Torres came off the bench to score the winner in the 106th minute, helping La Roja secure their second World Cup title. The victory also marked another major success for head coach Luis de la Fuente, who guided Spain to football’s biggest prize after winning UEFA Euro 2024.
After the final, Guinness World Records confirmed on its official X account that De la Fuente had become the oldest coach to win the FIFA World Cup. Spain also set another record by conceding just one goal throughout the tournament, the fewest by any team to win the competition.

Spain’s success was built on a strong defensive display from start to finish. The team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and allowed only one goal in eight matches. Against Argentina in the final, Spain controlled possession and created the better chances before Torres finally broke the deadlock with a close-range finish following Nico Williams’ headed assist.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced 12 saves to keep his side in the contest for as long as possible. However, Argentina failed to register a single shot during normal time and finished the match with 10 players after Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card late in regulation.
More records fall on the biggest stageThe final also produced several individual milestones. Spain’s Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, both 19, became only the fourth and fifth teenagers to play in a FIFA World Cup final and finish on the winning side.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi added another record by becoming the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup final at 39 years and 25 days. It was also his third appearance in a World Cup final, making him only the second player after Brazil legend Cafu to reach that achievement.
