Spain are world champions once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, securing the nation's second world title.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres finished from close range after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro's cross into his path. The
goal finally beat Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, whose outstanding performance had frustrated Spain throughout the match.

Spain controlled possession and created the majority of the chances from the opening whistle. Lamine Yamal threatened early with a low effort that Martínez pushed away, while Mikel Oyarzabal and Marc Cucurella also came close before halftime. Despite Spain's dominance, Argentina's disciplined defense and Martínez's series of saves kept the score level.

Argentina's task became more difficult as injuries forced Lionel Scaloni to replace both starting central defenders during the match. Lisandro Martínez left shortly before halftime, while Cristian Romero was substituted in the second half.

Spain continued to apply pressure after the break. Torres missed a headed opportunity from a Yamal cross, and Pau Cubarsí, Pedri, and Williams all tested Martínez. The Argentine goalkeeper also produced an impressive save from a late Yamal free kick to send the match into extra time.

The defending champions suffered another setback at the end of normal time when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card, leaving Argentina to play the remainder of the final with 10 men.

Extra time followed a similar pattern, with Spain maintaining control and creating the better opportunities. Williams and Torres both had goals ruled out before Torres finally broke the deadlock, finishing first time after Williams' headed assist to give Spain the breakthrough they had been seeking.

Argentina, who had scored 19 goals on their run to the final, struggled to create attacking opportunities against Spain's organized defense and did not register a shot until extra time.

After the match, Torres said: "Today destiny was written, it was made for us to win. We're far from our people today but we tried to be as close as possible to them."

The victory marks Spain's second FIFA World Cup triumph, adding to the title won in 2010, while Argentina's reign as world champions comes to an end after a hard-fought final in New York New Jersey.
