New Delhi, 20 July. On the call of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a large number of students and protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday. The protesters tried to take out a ‘Chalo Sansad’ march demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak issue. During this time, there was a situation of scuffle and clash between the police and the protesters.

Attempt to cross the barricade, stopped by police

Delhi Police had laid heavy barricades in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas to stop them from moving towards the Parliament area. The protesters attempted to cross the barricade, after which the police pushed them back. There was a tense atmosphere on the spot. Lathicharge also came up in some media reports, although this has not been officially confirmed. In view of the demonstration, Delhi Police had made extensive security arrangements. A large number of police personnel along with anti-riot vehicles were also deployed at Jantar Mantar. Movement was monitored by barricading in many sensitive areas of New Delhi district.

Patel Chowk metro station closed, signal jammers installed

As a precautionary measure, Patel Chowk metro station located near Jantar Mantar was temporarily closed. Signal jammers were also installed at the protest site and surrounding areas. Some protesters claimed that mobile networks were affected. Apart from this, around 5,000 Delhi Police personnel were deployed and security was also increased on the borders of the capital including the Delhi-Ghazipur border. Many students first gathered near Mandi House metro station and marched from there towards Jantar Mantar, raising slogans against the central government. As more students joined, the size of the demonstration grew larger.

Delhi Police denies reports of violence and detention

Delhi Police issued a statement saying that some media reports have circulated reports of police violence and detention of protesters, but no such incident has taken place. According to the police, the protests are being handled professionally and people have been appealed to ignore rumors and maintain peace.

The movement has been going on for a month

This protest at Jantar Mantar has been going on for more than a month. The main demands of the protesters are to fix accountability in the alleged NEET paper leak case and resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. They allege that the government has failed to ensure transparency and accountability in the examination system.
